Air purifiers are sold with more marketing noise than almost any home appliance. Ionizers, UV lamps, plasma, “hospital grade” claims and coverage figures that bear little relation to how a room actually behaves. Underneath all of it, the physics is simple: a fan pulls air through a filter, and the useful question is how much clean air it delivers per hour in your specific room. Once you understand HEPA grades, CADR and air changes per hour, the category becomes easy to shop. What an Air Purifier Can and Cannot Do

A good purifier meaningfully reduces airborne particulate: dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores, smoke particles and the fine PM2.5 fraction that penetrates deepest into the lungs. With the right media it also reduces odours and some volatile organic compounds.

What it cannot do is remove particles that have already settled on your carpet, sofa or bedding — those need vacuuming and washing. HEPA: What the Grades Actually Mean

True HEPA, sometimes written H13 or H14 under the European EN 1822 standard, captures at least 99.95 to 99.995 percent of particles at the most-penetrating particle size, which sits around 0.3 microns. That is the threshold worth having, and it is the level almost every reputable purifier now uses.

The important thing to know is that HEPA is not a sieve. It works through three mechanisms at once — interception, impaction and diffusion — which is why it captures both larger particles and very small ones efficiently, with its weakest performance in that 0.3 micron middle band. So a filter rated at 0.3 microns is actually better than that figure at both 0.1 and 1.0 microns.

Be wary of the phrases “HEPA-type”, “HEPA-like” and “99% HEPA”. These are unregulated marketing terms describing filters that may capture as little as 85 to 95 percent, which sounds close but represents several times more particles passing through. Look for a stated grade, ideally H13 or better.

Most machines pair HEPA with a pre-filter and activated carbon. The pre-filter catches hair and large dust so the expensive HEPA lasts longer; it should be washable. Activated carbon adsorbs odours, cooking smells, smoke and some VOCs. The amount matters enormously — a thin carbon-dusted mesh saturates within weeks, whereas a genuine carbon bed of several hundred grams works for months. CADR: The Only Performance Number That Matters

CADR is usually quoted separately for three test contaminants: smoke, dust and pollen. Smoke CADR is the strictest, because smoke particles are the smallest, so use that number when comparing machines.

Two caveats. First, published CADR is always measured on the highest fan speed, which on many units is far too loud to live with. Mentally discount to the setting you would actually run. Noise: The Reason Purifiers Get Switched Off

The most common failure of an air purifier is not technical — it is that the owner finds it annoying and turns it down or off. Noise deserves the same attention as CADR.

Around 25 to 35 decibels is genuinely quiet and suitable for a bedroom at night. From 40 to 50 decibels you get noticeable white noise, fine in a living room with the television on. Above 55 decibels it becomes intrusive in any room where people talk or sleep.

Check the decibel figure at the lowest setting and at the setting that delivers the CADR you actually need. Larger units with bigger fans move the same volume of air more slowly and therefore more quietly, which is the strongest practical argument for oversizing. Also check whether the display lights can be dimmed or turned off, since a bright indicator panel ruins a dark bedroom just as thoroughly as fan noise.

The purchase price is only part of what a purifier costs. Replacement filters typically run between a third and a half of the machine’s price every year, and some cheap units are effectively a subscription in disguise.

Before buying, look up the replacement filter price and the recommended interval. Combined HEPA-plus-carbon cartridges are convenient but wasteful, because the carbon usually saturates before the HEPA is spent. Separate stages let you replace only what is exhausted. Check that filters are genuinely available and not a proprietary part likely to be discontinued.

You can stretch filter life substantially. Vacuum or wash the pre-filter monthly, run the unit on a lower speed continuously rather than blasting it intermittently, and keep windows shut on high-pollen days. Filter change indicators are usually simple timers rather than real sensors, so use them as a prompt to inspect rather than an instruction to buy.

Technologies to Treat With Caution

  • Ionizers. Charge particles so they clump and fall out of the air. They do not remove anything from the room, and some designs produce ozone as a byproduct. If a unit has an ionizer, make sure it can be switched off.
  • Ozone generators. Ozone is a lung irritant. These should not be used in occupied spaces, whatever the marketing says.
  • UV-C lamps. Effective in laboratory conditions with long dwell times. Inside a purifier where air passes in a fraction of a second, the benefit over good HEPA filtration is marginal.
  • PCO and plasma systems. Claims vary widely and independent evidence is thin. Some produce byproducts including formaldehyde.

None of these replace mechanical filtration. Buy the HEPA and carbon performance; treat anything else as a bonus you can disable.

  • A real particulate sensor with a numeric PM2.5 readout, not just a coloured light. It lets you see the machine working and tune fan speed sensibly.

  1. Leave at least 30cm of clearance around the intake and outlet. Pushed flat against a wall or wedged behind furniture, a purifier recirculates its own output.
  2. Place it in the room where you spend the most time, not the largest room in the house. One unit cannot serve a whole floor through doorways.
  3. Run it continuously on a low or medium speed rather than in bursts. Steady low-speed operation holds particulate down and is far quieter.
  4. Close windows and doors while it runs, otherwise you are filtering a much larger volume than the machine is rated for.
  5. In a bedroom, position it a couple of metres from the bed so it is not blowing directly at you, and run it during the day too so the air is already clean at bedtime.
